Meet Jacob - Percussion Teacher

Jacob Swedlow is a drummer, composer, and vibraphonist based in Chicago IL. Jacob is known for bringing a fiery, creative energy to every musical situation he is in. He began drumming in middle school and has since earned his Bachelor’s of Music from Oberlin Conservatory where he studied with master instrumentalists such as Gary Bartz, Billy Hart, Eddie Henderson, and Phil Markowitz. During his time at Oberlin Jacob composed, arranged, and premiered award-winning pieces at the Danenberg Honors Recital, and was able to perform throughout the US and Europe with his ensembles. Jacob has been a part of many prestigious workshops such as the Generations in Jazz Master class held in Switzerland, where he worked with esteemed musician Mark Turner, the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program held at the Kennedy Center for the Performing arts, where he worked with prolific musicians such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jason Moran, and Gregory Hutchinson. He was also personally selected by American music legend, Sonny Rollins, to be the drummer in the inaugural year of the Oberlin Sonny Rollins Jazz Ensemble. The Ensemble performed at some of the top venues in the country (i.e. Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Club), gave benefit concerts to raise money for social justice work, performed and provided instruction at underfunded public schools in the Ohio/New Jersey/ New York area.
