Meet Wesley - Piano, Voice, Guitar, Classical Guitar

Wesley Abdill III was born and raised in Olney MD and was from an early age surrounded by musicians. With one older brother that played drums in a gigging rock band and another who was a classical pianist and woodwind player, he was exposed to music of all types. He started playing Electric guitar at a young age and later became interested in Classical guitar. After receiving an AA in Teacher Education, he earned his Bachelor’s in Music Performance w/Classical guitar.

During school, Wesley had received a number of educational and performance acolytes including: awards to the National Deans List for consecutive semesters- induction to the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society- winning several competitions for scholarships- singing with the TU University Chorale on numerous tours and with the BSO at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall- graduating with honors- write-ups in several publications including Guitar World magazine- and has had Studio compositional recordings played on several local radio stations including WHFS.

With 20 years of professional private teaching, he has taught students of all ages and levels from pre-K up through retired, beginner thru advanced, and all different styles to people of all walks of life! They have ranged from individuals pursuing a music degree, to those who are learning music just for fun…

In his approach to teaching he says, "that it is vital to assess each students particular learning processes and adaptabilities in order to help the student learn as productively and as simply as possible, while having a good time in the process. It is also important to be versatile and flexible enough to help the students learn how to play the music in the style that he or she wants to play! I have experience in nearly all styles with the exception to some eclectic ones and can easily adapt to fit the needs of the student"

"I truly enjoy sharing my love for music and my knowledge with others! The opportunity to achieve that through teaching is something of personal value to me. It's a great feeling to inspire a student to want to learn about what I love doing the most, and then have the means to take them there if they are willing! It allows me to bring energy and enthusiasm to every lesson which is a step on a journey to a greater sense of self enlightenment" - That's what it is for me!

The teaching instruction that I received from Mr. Abdill is far beyond that provided by my previous teachers in terms of focus on music interpretation, technical ability, and understanding of musical theory. Moreover, his patience as a teacher is, well, surprising. To believe as a student that one has achieved some level of musical prowess, prior to receiving his instruction and only to learn that so much more is to be learned. Mr. Abdill only encouraged me kindly as he taught me each of these skills anew, enabling me to become a far better student of classical guitar. My understanding of the possibilities of the instrument, technique, and music theory have broadened far beyond what I expected. I am amazed that he regularly adds to my musical understanding and skills, and my thought process on how to approach the instrument. And I am deeply grateful to have found him and that he has taken me on as a student (I do, affectionately, refer to him as “Master Yoda” as I feel that I am under the guidance of a superior educator).

”Our son John was fortunate to have Wes as a teacher for over 10 years starting at the age of eight and continuing until he left for college. During those years Wes instilled in John a love of playing the guitar, a desire to play more technically complex music, and encouraged him to continue improving his skills through practice. We are blessed that our son’s first guitar teacher will probably be with him for much of his life. Today, despite his busy schedule, Wes always seems to be able to accommodate John when he’s home from college to help him keep his playing skills sharp and learn new techniques.
