Meet Drew - Percussion Teacher

Drew Hatch is an experienced drummer and musician from Utah who is passionate about personal expression through the rhythmic and melodic aspects of creating music. Drew started private drum lessons at the age of 8, and has been practicing, playing, gigging, and recording for over 20 years. He has recorded and gigged with multiple bands – including the Tyler Gould Band – and played shows at venues such as Platinum Music and Velour in Provo. He has also sung in A Cappella and Chamber Choir, where he competed in and won 1st place, with “Superior” in all categories, at the Seattle and Anaheim Heritage Festivals. Drew is a proud father, and enjoys playing guitar and piano, freestyle rapping, and playing games with family and friends in his free time.

Adapting exercises and lessons from some of history’s great drumming mentors, Drew has developed a method for teaching drums which practically applies both tried-and-true and modern-day knowledge to help each student excel and progress toward their goals. Fundamentals such as learning the basic roles of drums in music, improving coordination, and applying rudiments to the set will be taught early on. Equal emphasis will be placed on helping students define and achieve their vision as musicians. When the student knows what they want to accomplish or specialize in, lessons can be tailored to help them learn the concepts and reach their goals as efficiently as possible. If a student’s vision for lessons is to just have fun and play an instrument that allows them to hit things and make noise, that can also be arranged (although learning the basics will still be highly encouraged, as it makes for much more fun later on).

Students will learn applicable skills to help them become well-rounded drummers and musicians, such as: counting rhythms and subdivisions out loud, transcribing parts, sight-reading sheet music / jazz charts / drum tabs, playing by ear, playing to a click, playing in a band, playing to songs, dynamics and feel, and much more.

Drew seeks to help build up those he teaches, and loves to see people discovering and achieving their potential. With the right guidance, mindset, and by putting in the work, Drew believes that a vision can truly become a reality.
