Meet Kayleigh - Voice Teacher

I am an accoladed gigging musician and recording artist with over fifteen years of experience singing. With seven years of classical training, ten years singing jazz, and five years recording pop songs, my background is well-rounded. I was making up songs practically from the time I could talk, and singing has always been my biggest source of joy. I infuse my lessons with this passion. Singing can be a vulnerable experience, so I strive to create a warm and encouraging, yet challenging learning environment for my students.

What I love about singing is that your instrument is part of you, produced and supported by a system of physiology. And like a fingerprint, everyone’s instrument has a unique timbre, or sound quality. Over time, though, the voice can also be trained to produce completely new sounds. This is why I try to instill a growth mindset in every student. I provide students with a toolbox of exercises to strengthen and engage the diaphragm, create steady breath support, relax the jaw, and more. I’m also knowledgeable about caring for the voice to support longevity; whether that be preparing for a long session of singing, or implementing regular practices that support vocal health. My teaching style focuses on creating a strong foundation of proper technique, from which we can explore any style of music.

One of my personal favorites is jazz. I love that it’s new every time. Though as jazz musicians we draw from the same selection of standards, none is performed exactly the same way twice. When you improvise melodically and rhythmically, you’re composing music on the spot. It can be daunting, but by implementing a few accessible and actionable tools, we can take the apprehension out of vocal improvisation.
